The parable of the householder

The Parable of  The Householder's Treasure

 Scripture
:  Mat 13:34  Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.
Why study this parable? The need to know precedes even our need for food. There is wisdom that only comes with age and experience. You have been brought into the fold, you know your masters voice, and you also know who and what will harm you. This wisdom which God has imparted to you will carry you through this life, but you are meant to share it with those who belong to God. Do this in remembrance of him who called you to himself. Share your life
Meditation:  Are we to throw away the old for the sake of the new? Or renounce the new, because we prefer the old? The "scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven" is certainly privileged.  A scribe in Jesus' time was noted for his learning of the Jewish scriptures (the Old Covenant). He was a teacher of God's law and wisdom. The scribe (and disciple) who recognizes the new teaching and law which Jesus brings, does not need to abandon everything he learned.
Heb 8:11  No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.
Mat 13:10  The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?"
For whosoever hath, to him shall be given,.... Whoever has the true grace of God implanted in him, has a saving knowledge of Christ, and a spiritual acquaintance with the doctrines of the Gospel, shall have more grace given him; he shall grow in the knowledge of Christ, and the Spirit of truth shall lead him into all truth:

Questions:
2.      Who were the scribes?  Evangelical Scribes are here meant, see Mat_23:34 the preachers of the everlasting Gospel.
3.      What did Jesus mean by the phrase, “trained for the Kingdom of Heaven”?
4.  Who from your life & times would you think would fit the title of Scribe?
Act_6:7  So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.
5. Do you recall any type of parable from today’s culture?
6. Who is the “Householder”? Who in your life experience, is a householder?
7. Do you suppose that as an older adult that you have ever been given wisdom by God? Luke 21: 15
9. Why was Jesus bringing up this statement about the householder?
10. How does what is said here apply to us as mothers and fathers, grandparents and guardians, teachers, and students of Christ’s teaching today?

11. Who are the teachers to which Jesus refers? How are they trained?
12. What are the old treasures? How are they like a householder?
13. What are the new treasures to which Jesus refers? And how do they apply to this parable?
Rev 1:17  When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.

The Parable of  The Householder's Treasure
Jesus continues speaking to his disciples:

Mat 13:35  So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world."

Mat 13:51  "Have you understood all these things?" Jesus asked. "Yes," they replied.
Mat 13:52  He said to them, "Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old."
Mat 13:53  When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.

He can now use it in a new light which Christ reveals to those who listen. The words "old" and "new" are often used in the New Testament to refer to the Law of the Old Covenant and to the Gospel.  So, a scribe or disciple who is trained by Christ understands and teaches both the Law and the Gospel. Consider how impoverished we would be if we only had the Old Testament or the New Testament, rather than both. The Lord gives us wisdom so we can make the best use of both the old and the new.

He doesn't want us to hold rigidly to the past and to be resistant to the new work of his Holy Spirit in our lives. We are under a new Covenant.
Scribes of that day were lawyers and teachers of the law and were trained in the instruction of the people to interpret the law and apply it as it has been presented.  Christ has Changed that.
Heb 9:15  For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant
It is the will of Christ, that all those who read and hear the word should understand it; for otherwise how should they get good by it? It is therefore good for us, when we have read or heard the word, to examine ourselves, or to be examined, whether we have understood it or not.

Heb 8:12  For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."

Heb 8:13  By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

Mat 13:11  He replied, "Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

Mat 13:12  Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.
The Parable of  The Householder's Treasure

1.      What law was there in that day?  Who were the teachers?

Act_9:1  Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples

     8. What does Jesus mean by “Treasure”? Luke 21:15  For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

Rev 1:18  I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

Mat 13:52  He said to them,
